You can manage your stress with ease if you know what works and what doesn’t. For example, studies have shown that stuff like watching TV, drinking, or smoking reduce mental sharpness and increase stress. So watching TV or getting a drink is NOT a solution for stress relief. Yet many people do exactly this and end up in a worse state than before as their stress accumulates over the months and years. Following the 10 easy stress relief methods below, in some sort of mix, will satisfy most people’s needs for stress management. Some cost money and some don’t, but all are very effective and worth trying out. 1. Go for a jog or even a brisk walk around the block. Doing enough exercise to break a sweat releases endorphins and helps you relax naturally. It is a great counter to stress and reenergizes you as well. 2. Take a hot shower or bath. Warm to hot water relaxes your muscles. If you need to be alert after your bath or shower, finish off with a cold-water rinse. This should wake you up. 3. Visit a local massage therapist. Look in the Yellow Pages for shiatsu or Swedish massage, which will release a lot of tension stored in your body. 4. Hatha yoga is a system of body movements and stretches from ancient India that have become very popular in modern culture. You can find yoga classes offered in the Yellow Pages, at your local YMCA, or on video at your local bookstore such as Barnes & Nobles. A good yoga workout releases tension and helps you relax deeply. It can also release endorphins. 5. Acupuncture is a method from Chinese medicine that can do wonders for stress relief. The philosophy behind it involves putting needles at points in the body to encourage the natural flow of energy through your body. The idea is that your body’s energy can be blocked by the daily stresses of life and by using acupuncture you can clear it up. Acupuncture has been heavily documented by Western medicine as being extremely effective for pain and stress relief. You can find local practitioners in your Yellow Pages. 6. Acupressure; If you feel queasy about needles, then you can try out the massage form of acupuncture called acupressure. You can find local practitioners who offer acupressure and shiatsu massage for as low as 10 bucks for 10 dollars across many malls across the United States. Most acupuncturists are also familiar with this method. 7. Reflexology is another method from the same system of Chinese medicinal techniques listed above. The only difference is that all the massage is focused on the hands and feet. The theory is that you have nerve endings in your hands and feet that are connected to every major organ in your body. By massaging your hands and feet in a specific way you can stimulate your whole body to relax. Look up reflexology on Google for the techniques, books and videos. 8. Breathing is still the easiest and one of the most effective ways for stress management. Breathe slow deep and steady while only concentrating on your breath. If you like, you can count your breaths to help you focus. Doing this for a few minutes will relieve stress automatically. 9. A relaxation technique is a great way to release stress completely. An easy and affective technique is to lie down in a comfortable position with your legs uncrossed and your arms at your side. Beginning at your feet, consciously tense up your muscles and then relax them. Do this one muscle group at a time until you reach your scalp. Then relax for a few minutes using the breathing method outlined above. Do this for 15-20 minutes and you will be completely stress free and rejuvenated. 10. L-Glutamine is an amino acid present in everyone’s body in small amounts. Studies have shown that L-Glutamine improves self-hydration, boosts your immune system, increases growth hormones by over 400% with just a 2 gram dose, is good for your intestines, helps reduce ulcers and protects your muscles. It has no side-effects as long as you stick within the suggested dose with ranges from 2-3 grams. If you over do it, you can get an upset stomach or even headache. L-Glutamine will not only relieve your stress, but can help you create a feeling of alertness and rejuvenation without a crash as you would experience with sugar or caffeine. You can get it at any nutritional store. Try out each one of the above methods to see which ones are most effective for you. Then do them regularly. I particularly recommend doing breathing and relaxation on a regular basis no matter what else you choose to do for your stress relief and management needs.
